A Day at Ultra-Trail Australia

The third-largest trail event in the world, in the heart of the Blue Mountains. Each year, thousands of runners, spectators and crews gather on the streets and trails, with four races happening over the weekend: 11km, 22km, 50km and 100km. This year, I participated UTA50 for the first time, also crewed my friends afterwards. Here’s a bit of behind the scene for the event.

Part 1: The Race

Coming into the race with no time goal, I wanted to enjoy the race and take some photos of what it’s like during the race. It was a long 50km of running and walking for me. Taking photos seems to distract me from the pain.

Part 2: Fairmont Water Station

5 hours later, I finished my race and came back to this aid station again to support my friends. I stood there and watched these 100 km runners coming in, with relief on their faces as they see people, food and water. 30 km to go as they leave for their next checkpoint.

Part 3: The Finish Line

I made it back just in time to see my friend Matt Gore finishing his fastest ever 100km in 11 hours 5 min. The spectators cheered on as both 50km and 100km runners coming in with the biggest smile on their faces.

Part 4: Breakfast with LDP

LDP – a group of university students and alumni from USYD and UNSW. The 22km, 50km, 100km runners and the crews all came together to celebrate the achievements of the group, a few UTA debuts, some of their first 100km, some shiny new PBs.
